National figures show the Government’s Work Programme has got only two in every hundred applicants into jobs. The statistics for Erith and Thamesmead are even worse, with just 2.1% of local people referred to the Work programme in the last 12 months getting back to work and staying in the job for three to six months.
“Today’s figures reveal the Work Programme is comprehensively failing the people of Erith and Thamesmead. The Government’s scheme has got just 2.1% of local people referred to the Work programme back to work in the last 12 months – even worse than if the Government had done nothing.
“Meanwhile there are 1,045 people in Erith and Thamesmead claiming Job Seekers allowance who been out of work for more than a year and just over six claimants chasing each job vacancy. This Government is letting local people down.
“I will be asking the Work and Pensions Secretary exactly how much public money has been given to private companies running the Work Programme to produce outcomes that are worse than if nothing had been done at all.”
