Latest jobs figures shows the Government is letting down Erith and Thamesmead

Figures released by the Office for National Statistics today show that long term unemployment in Erith and Thamesmead is up 23% in the last year, and long-term youth unemployment up 29%.

Teresa said:

“These are big increases in the numbers of local people who have been unemployed for a long time. It is getting clearer by the day that this Government is letting down our area.

“Unfortunately this is a familiar picture across the UK – seventy thousand more people are now on the dole than last month and youth unemployment has risen by 20,000.

“We need urgent action, starting with Labour’s compulsory jobs guarantee to get anyone out of work for more than two years back into a job. I don’t want to see a whole generation condemned to long term unemployment.”
