Teresa and Jon Culshaw pledges support to improve care for terminally ill

Teresa has pledged to champion the concerns of local people with a terminal illness by lending her support to Marie Curie’s campaign calling for the right for everyone to have palliative care when they need it.

Teresa teamed up with Marie Curie Nurse Sally Monger-Godfrey and renowned impressionist Jon Culshaw to back the campaign from the UK’s leading charity for people living with any terminal illness and their families.

Teresa said:

“I am pleased to pledge my support to improve care for those suffering with a terminal illness.

“One in four people each year who need palliative care miss out on it because their needs are not recognised or they are not referred on to the right services.

“We have an ageing population, and need to increase our support for those in end of life care to ensure that everyone is able to receive good quality care in their final days.”

Jon Culshaw, a valued supporter of Marie Curie, said:

“Like most of us, I believe that everyone should have the right to palliative care when they need it.

“That’s why I’m supporting Marie Curie’s campaign to make this a reality.”

If you or someone you’re close to has a terminal illness, you can call the Marie Curie Support Line on 0800 090 2309 Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm or visit mariecurie.org.uk/help.

Teresa Pearce MP Speaks at Everyday Heroes Event in Parliament

Teresa Pearce MP yesterday spoke at the Everyday Heroes event, hosted by St John Ambulance in pq_mCCOgugLCT27JhxjaQ8C4eCFrr8qjavoSL8bK878Marliament.

The awards are to celebrate exceptional people who have stepped in to help in an emergency or have worked extremely hard to raise money and awareness for first aid.

The winner, teenager Max Wilson – son of former Top Gear presenter, Quentin Wilson – saved his sister’s life with his quick thinking, following a serious accident involving a door which left her artery severed. Max called emergency services, stemmed the bleeding using a makeshift kit involving a dog lead, and directed paramedics to the house in France by reading directions on the side of a bottle of wine.

Teresa spoke about the need to teach emergency first aid skills to all school children, so that all children will know what to do in an emergency. Max puts his actions down to the training he received in first aid from the Combined Cadet Force in his school.

Teresa Pearce MP said:

“Basic first aid skills can transform lives and teach responsibility.

That’s why the campaign’s called ‘Every Child A Lifesaver’: because every child has the untapped potential to save a life.

The bill doesn’t expect the impossible to suddenly become possible. But we can give people the absolute best chance of surviving by equipping children with the skills to keep them alive while the ambulance gets to them.”

The Second Reading of the Private Member’s Bill is 20 November. Over 12,000 constituents have contacted their MP in support of the bill. Members from all parties have expressed support.

Teresa warns of Christmas transport disruption

Teresa today warned constituents of forthcoming station closures for people travelling to London by rail over the Christmas period.

Thameslink improvement works will be undertaken by Network Rail from the evening of 24 December 2015 until 4 January 2016, which will result in London Bridge Station being totally closed.

Teresa said:

“London Bridge, Waterloo East, Charing Cross and Cannon Street will all be closed from 24 December for ten full days. Many of my constituents will continue to commute during this period, and others may wish to use the holiday season to explore London or visit friends and families. I urge all rail travellers to check now how they may be affected by having to find alternative routes into London.

“Tickets will be accepted on alternative routes and some rail replacement buses will be available, but the best advice would be to check before you travel to make sure that you are not affected by the disruption.”

Full details are available on Southeastern’s website here.

Teresa Pearce MP questions Health Secretary on 111 Hotline

Teresa Health

Teresa recently questioned Jeremy Hunt, the Health Secretary on the poor service provided by the NHS 111 non-emergency hotline at Health Questions.

Teresa asked:

“A recent whistleblower revealed that the 111 helpline is in meltdown and at least two babies have died after staff failed to recommend treatment that may have saved them.

“Two weeks ago my own three-week-old premature granddaughter was very ill. Her parents called 111 and were promised that the duty doctor would call. He did not.

“They waited the whole long night and the next morning took her to A&E and she was diagnosed with meningitis.

“What exactly are you doing to fix the crisis in the 111 service?”

The Secretary of State responded:

“This is a very serious issue and I will happily look into it personally to make sure that a full investigation is happening into the incident you talk about, which clearly should not have happened.

“The 111 service has, I think, been an improvement on what we had before – it’s taking nearly three times as many calls as the previous service that it replaced – and around a quarter of those are referred to a clinician.

“But it’s clearly not perfect given the stories you have said, so I will look into the case you have raised.”

Speaking after the debate, Teresa said:

“I was pleased that the Secretary of State took my question seriously and admitted that there are problems with the 111 hotline.

“The poor service is affecting families across the country, and it is vital that the government act now to address this crisis and ensure that the service is fit for purpose.”

Teresa Launches Campaign for Emergency First Aid Education in Schools

Teresa Pearce - campaign launch

Teresa Pearce MP has launched the Every Child A Lifesaver campaign in support of her Private Member’s Bill to make emergency first aid education compulsory in all state-funded schools.

Speaking at the All Party Parliamentary Group on First Aid, Members of Parliament were briefed on the purpose of the Bill and the campaign.

On 20 November, the Emergency First Aid Bill will have its second reading in Parliament. Members of the public are being urged to visit everychildalifesaver.org/action to call on their MP to vote in support of first aid in schools.

Teresa said:

“What the Bill aims to do is simple, straightforward and common-sense.

At the moment only a quarter of secondary school teachers surveyed said their school taught CPR; 15% said their school taught defibrillator awareness; and just 10% both.

If we want to save lives, these numbers have to be higher.

The Bill doesn’t expect the impossible to suddenly become possible. Every one of us knows that not everybody can survive a serious accident or a medical emergency.

But we can give people the absolute best chance of surviving by equipping people with the skills to keep them alive while the ambulance gets to them and transform the next generation into potential lifesavers.”

The Bill has cross party support, and has been supported by St Johns Ambulance, the British Red Cross and the British Heart Foundation.

Teresa Pearce MP also raised her Private Members Bill with the Prime Minister on 9 September, at Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs), and was pleased that the Prime Minister promised to look at the Bill.

Teresa helps raise breast cancer awareness

Teresa Pearce MP has taken part in Breast Cancer Now’s ‘wear it pink’ campaign to show her support for women with breast cancer.Teresa Pearce MP (3)

The fundraising day for the UK’s largest breast cancer charity is taking place on Friday 23rd October.

Teresa took part to encourage her constituents to get involved in the fundraiser, to raise money for life-saving breast cancer research.

Teresa Pearce MP said:

“Breast cancer affects so many peoples’ lives. Sadly, nearly 12,000 women a year still lose their lives to the disease. It’s time to fight back.

I fully support the ambition of Breast Cancer Now: to ensure that no one dies from the disease by 2050. We need to make sure that they receive the funding to carry out the cutting-edge research necessary to make this goal a reality.

Taking part in the wear it pink campaign is a fantastic idea and I encourage everyone in Erith and Thamesmead to get involved. So dress in pink on Friday 23rd October, have a lot of fun and show your support at the same time.’

Breast Cancer Now is the UK’s largest breast cancer charity, created by the merger of Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

Teresa Raises Commuters Concerns

Teresa red jacketTeresa today questioned the Rail Minister and senior rail executives at a Service Delivery Summit held at London Bridge.

The Summit, which also included a tour of the improvement works at London Bridge, was participated in by senior executives from Network Rail, Southeastern, and Transport Focus, and was held to review the plan for delivering better services for rail customers on Southeastern routes travelling into London Bridge, Victoria, Cannon Street and Charing Cross stations.

Teresa said:

“I am regularly contacted by constituents who have concerns with Southeastern rail services.

“The improvement works at London Bridge have caused disruption to many commuters across the South East through overcrowding, cancellations and delays.

“I was pleased to have the opportunity to stand up for commuters in my constituency again by raising their concerns directly with the Rail Minister and Southeastern, and to urge them to act now to improve the service. MPs from across the political divide joined together to speak with one voice about the problems commuters are facing.

“I am happy that the Minister has agreed to have a further meeting with MPs from South East London to look closer at the problems our constituents are experiencing.”

Teresa condemns rail fare rises

Teresa red jacketTeresa has today condemned the announcement that rail fares will rise again in January 2016, meaning that passengers in Erith and Thamesmead have been hit by a cost increase of 33% since 2010.

The new fare rises will come into effect on 2 January 2016. Figures released yesterday show that the cost of an annual season ticket from Abbey Wood to Central London has risen by £329 or 33% since 2010 and that rail fares have risen nearly three times faster than wages in the UK over the past five years.

Teresa  said:

“Overall passenger satisfaction has declined since 2010, and commuters are paying more and more each year to travel on increasingly overcrowded and unreliable trains.

“For many commuters it is getting more and more difficult to make ends meet, with falling wages in real terms unable to match a rising cost of living.

“It is wrong to raise fares again when fares have risen so dramatically in recent years, and while the train service has not improved, and given the disruption to journeys caused by the long-term work at London Bridge, commuters deserve a fare reduction – not an increase.”

Teresa slams ‘living wage’ spin and condemns decision to cut tax credits

Teresa red jacket

Teresa has condemned the government’s decision to cut tax credits in Wednesday’s Budget, and has criticised the Chancellor’s spin regarding the introduction of a ‘National Living Wage.’

The cut to tax credits will affect over 3 million people in work. The proposed ‘National Living Wage’ will see working people aged over 25 paid a minimum of £7.20 an hour in 2016 rising to £9 an hour by 2020.

A lone parent with two children working 16 hours at the National Minimum Wage would gain just over £400 from the move to a ‘living wage.’ But they would lose twice that – £860 from the changes to tax credits in 2016/17.

A couple with two children where both work full time at the National Minimum Wage will gain £1560 from the change to the ‘living wage.’ But they will lose over £2,200 from changes to tax credits and not benefit from the National Minimum Wage measure.

Speaking immediately after the budget, Teresa said:

“Today’s budget was not what this country and our area needed.

“While the rise in the National Minimum Wage is welcome, it is not a Living Wage. In fact, when it is introduced the new rate will be lower than the Living Wage this year. What my constituents need is support, not spin.

“Today’s cuts to tax credits outweigh the measures on pay, leaving many families worse off. A family with one earner on average earnings and two children will lose over £2,000 in tax credits next year from the changes announced today.

“Today’s budget was not the budget that the country and my constituents needed. It will leave many of my constituents worse off.”

08072015 TP PMQs - Age UK
