Teresa raises awareness of the dangers of counterfeit electrical goods

Teresa today welcomed research by the charity Electrical Safety First which raises awareness of the dangers of counterfeit electrical goods.

Research by leading safety charity Electrical Safety First found that 1 in 6 consumers in the UK have bought a fake electrical item as a Christmas gift – and most of us are unable to identify a genuine electrical product from a fake.

Speaking at the launch of the research, Teresa said:

“Christmas is always expensive, and we are all keen to get a bargain. But Electrical Safety First’s research makes clear that there are real dangers to fake electrical goods.

“I was shocked to find out that 3 out of 5 fake electrical goods are purchased online and a third of buyers experience a major problem with the item. Almost half of all domestic fires in the UK are caused by electricity.

“Fake goods are often cheaper because they omit key components which can affect the safety and the functionality of the product. If unsure of whether the product you are buying is a fake or not, I would urge you to use Electrical Safety First’s online advice – it could be the difference between a Happy Christmas and not!”

Electrical Safety First has developed advice to help people spot a fake electrical product.

Teresa joins call for Pension Credit to be extended to WASPI women

teresa-pearce-mpTeresa today welcomed Labour proposals to help end the plight of the tens of thousands of women abandoned to live in poverty by the Tory Government’s changes to their state pension age.

The Government’s changes have affected 2.6 million women, who would have retired under the 1995 Pensions Act.

Under the plan, Pension Credit will be extended to those who were due to retire before the pension age increase of the Conservative-led Coalition Government. This would alleviate the worst of the impacts for the most vulnerable women, and restore some of the dignity many of them feel they have been robbed of.

Speaking about the proposals, Teresa said:

“The lack of notice given to 1950s women regarding changes in the state pension age by the Government has left many facing real hardship. It is vital that action takes place now, to end the hardship faced by women in Erith and Thamesmead who have worked all their lives, but find that they cannot retire as planned.

“It was disappointing that the Government did nothing to help affected women in this week’s Autumn Statement. The government has completely failed to act to address the plight of these women. I call on the Government to address the concerns that are being raised by thousands of women up and down the country by implementing Labour’s proposals.”

Teresa supports fair pay in Living Wage Week

capture

This Living Wage Week, Teresa has pledged her support for the campaign to secure a real Living Wage.

The Labour Party is committed to the Living Wage, and under the next Labour government everyone will earn enough to live on through the introduction of a statutory Real Living Wage – independent forecasts put this at over £10 per hour in 2020.

Teresa said:

“It is a disgrace that low pay has been allowed to flourish in Erith and Thamesmead under the Tory Government. No one should work full time but still be in poverty.

“One of the greatest achievements of the government elected in 1997 was the establishment of a national minimum wage, lifting millions out of poverty. If you work for a living you should be paid a real living wage.”

Teresa welcomes new river crossings announcement

teresa-pearce-mpTeresa has welcomed today’s announcement by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, for new greener and more accessible river crossings connecting the East and South-East of London.

The announcement will see new river crossings to benefit all road users – from pedestrians and cyclists to drivers. A key part of the proposals is a new proposed extension of the DLR to Thamesmead and the potential for an Overground rail extension across the river from Barking to Abbey Wood.

The proposals could also see a potential riverbus between Canary Wharf and North Greenwich.

A full consultation on the proposals will be announced soon.

Speaking about the proposals, Teresa Pearce MP said:

“I welcome the announcement on new river crossings today by our Mayor, Sadiq Khan.

“I have long called for public transport river crossings. Connecting the South-East and East of London is vital not only to allow the capital’s economy to grow and thrive, but to boost connectivity in our local area.

“Today’s proposals will encourage growth, reduce travel times and will expand opportunities. Bringing the DLR to Thamesmead is a game-changer and fulfils the promises made when Thamesmead was built over 50 years ago.”

Teresa speaks at British Red Cross parliamentary event to help people save lives

The British Red Cross launches their new research report, Don't Stop at 999, to MPs and Lords in parliament during an interactive drop-in session. The research found that up to 59 per cent of prehospital deaths from injury may have been prevented by the administration of first aid before the arrival of the emergency medical services. L to R Teresa Pearce MP for Erith and Thamesmead, Will Quince MP for Colchester and Anne McColl, Director of Education, British Red Cross.

Teresa spoke on Tuesday at a British Red Cross event promoting its ‘Don’t Stop at 999 Campaign.’

New research from the British Red Cross reveals that up to 59% of deaths from injury could potentially be prevented if the public knew first aid. The research was launched in Parliament on Tuesday and revealed that whilst 93% will call for an ambulance if they find someone with an injury, first aid intervention of any kind was infrequent.

The Red Cross is calling for more opportunities to learn first aid throughout one’s lifetime, starting at school, but also through the driving test and public health initiatives.

The latest research follows the British Red Cross, St John Ambulance and British Heart Foundation’s ‘Every Child a Lifesaver’ campaign last year in support of Teresa Pearce MP’s Private Members’ Bill to make first aid mandatory in all state-funded secondary schools in England. Despite widespread support the Bill was ‘talked out’ and did not progress past its second reading.

Speaking after the event, Teresa Pearce MP said:

“I was pleased to welcome this report which highlights the need for more opportunities to learn first aid.

“When faced with an injured person almost everyone is able to dial 999, but most people are unable to help any further. That initial assistance could be the difference between life and death, but many are just not trained or not confident to be able to administer basic first aid.

“I support the British Red Cross’ call for more opportunities to learn first aid be that at school, in your driving test or through public health initiatives.”

The British Red Cross helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies. We enable vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare for and withstand emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help them recover and move on with their lives. redcross.org.uk

Teresa hosts event to raise awareness of Lyme Disease

Teresa hosted an event in Parliament on Tuesday 6 September to raise awareness of Lyme Disease.

Lyme Disease is a crippling tick-borne infection which can become a chronic, debilitating and disabling condition if not treated. However, Lyme Disease not currently a notifiable disease in the UK and as such the number of new cases per year is unknown. Estimates range from 3,000 to 45,000 new cases annually, and treatment of the disease varies across the country.

The event was attended by over 30 MPs from across the country and was held in conjunction with Lyme Disease UK.

Speaking after the event, Teresa said:

“There is a real lack of awareness of the dangers which Lyme Disease presents those infected, and many GPs are not aware of how best to treat it.

“I was pleased to host this event in Parliament to highlight Lyme Disease and hope that with greater awareness of the disease and its implications those suffering with it can receive better treatment.”

Teresa responds to the Government’s decision to delay plans to privatise the Land Registry

Teresa Pearce MP, Labour’s Shadow Housing and Planning Minister, responding to the Government’s decision to delay plans to privatise the Land Registry, said:

“At last the government has seen sense and decided to think again about this senseless scheme to privatise the Land Registry.

“The Land Registry is a public service and is run at no expense to the taxpayer – indeed it has made a surplus in 19 of the last 20 years and paid back £119m to the public purse last year alone.

“The government must keep the Land Registry in public hands, and should now drop their plans to privatise it, refocus on the housing crisis before us and come forward with a coherent plan to urgently build the homes we need.”
